How Matt Cutts made us #1 for paid directory links!

OK he didn’t really, but I found it quite surprising to find searches for paid directory links coming through in our web stats today.

This is because the #1 Google ranking for this search is our post titled Matt Cutts says paid directory links are fine. Perhaps after the great Google directory ban there’s no other unbanned sites left relevant to this search anymore!

How Matt Cutts made us #1 for paid directory links
It’s quite interesting to see the actual directories which are listed for this query, other than the Yahoo! Directory I wouldn’t say that the rest of these are the top paid directories on the web. To be honest I think Google still has a long way to go before getting this right in what seems to be the unenviable task of sorting which directories are just selling links as opposed to the ones charging for review fees and only listing quality sites. I have to agree with Rands post which suggests that all directories, large or small, should be treated in the same manner and any penalised sites should be stripped of their PageRank as this would make the devalued links more obvious to buyers than the current method of punishing these directories within the search engines.

Update: Just noticed we’re ranking #7 for SEO Directory on Yahoo! as well, one place behind SEOmoz, not sure if either of those listings are too relevant!

    Oh… So that’s why:

Matt Cutts is a l33t hax0r so once you type his name you get high rankins. Try Matt Cutts Buy Drugs and you are #1. Hurray to Google and their fucking algorithm where all edu and gov rank for any more competitive keyword with all the spam shit. Oh wait, there is one more link if it’s not edu or gov, it’s a WIKIPEDIA. Now If I type Insurance in Googe, I probably know what *IS* insurance so why list that fucking wiki here? Why?

I bet you will delete this comment, just had to write something as G serps are crap.

Completely agree with the Wikipedia comment, if you wanted to know what insurance actually is you’d do a define:insurance search, the Wikipedia entry will be of no interest at all to most searchers.

Not sure if putting Matt Cutts’ name in the title of every page will get you top search rankings for every keyword though! :)

Type SEO Blog in “big G”,

#1 is Matt Cutts, but why?

    I check his latest posts

    mattcutts.com/blog/

    Still chuggin
    My favorite pedometer: Omron HJ-720ITC
    Talk like a pirate day!
Startup idea: Make My Music Legal

Do you see anything “SEO” here? As I don’t. And why he is #1? Because he works in Google and his block is a crap (if you need seo stuff).

Now a days, I think the traditional ways of building links won’t help one website to rank better in SERPs. The algos are becoming smart and the bots are behaving even more smartly. Have you seen Matt cutts opined about directory quality.

Viral marketing of your website can fetch you good amount of links now a days.
