Microsoft pledges Google catch-up

Posted on March 7th, 2008 by Stuart Tofts

Microsoft has been comically bemoaning the fact it has a smaller chunk of the search engine market than Google at a recent conference for developers in the US.

Chief executive of Microsoft Steve Ballmer pledged that he would give his last breath fighting for a greater search market share alongside dominating giant Google.

Referring to his company as the “little search engine that could”, Ballmer acknowledged that Google possesses the lion’s share of the market but guaranteed that his organisation planned to fight for a greater chunk of the industry.

Microsoft is not exactly a small business itself and – when the head of an international mega-corporation is so determined to capture a greater share of the search sector – it just highlights the increasing importance of such engines.

However, many marketers also appear to be aware of the growing importance of a firm’s online presence. Recently, research published by Forrester revealed that European spending on web marketing is likely to rise to 18 per cent of businesses’ budgets by 2012.

It’s never too late for Microsoft to get back on track in the competition though it’ll take some time to make it up and improve their system

Microsoft does have the resources to take on Google and other search engine competitors, so it should be an interesting battle to watch.
