I think its industry specific and the bottom line has to be in what's measurable.
SEO/PPC/Social all have their metrics but without tracking the results and modifying accordingly...no rules will work..Thank you for the content!

I agree that while paid search is very useful most of the major keywords are dominated by large lead generation agencies making it very expensive.

Paid search is definitely easier when there are fewer competitors, but a campaign can suceed in the most competitive areas; you just need to get more value per click then the competition

If there are alot of websites using paid search, it is not recommended. But if there are no websites that use paid search for your target keyword then you might succeed and i highly recommend it. :)

Context;
Most analytics packages enable you to monitor traffic from paid search camapigns. Here at SEOptimise we mostly use Google Analytics because most of our PPC work is done in AdWords.
Kyle;
The thing about paid search, that I probably didn't make enough of in the post, is that it is really easy to monitor results. My 1 more specific rule would be; test as much as you can.

Nice rules although I really think they are general enough to apply to SEO, Social Media, or any other kind of online campaign. Not that it's a bad thing, but don't you think there are more specific rules you could have about SEM?
