So true, the bad apples are make us all SEOs looking bad in the web dev, designers and other web workers even users, look bad and evil. As I do SEO for clients, I still need to promote myself as so. But in 2010, will focus on the common sense approach which is something I'm a big fan anyway; blending Usability, Accessbility, Technical SEO and Online marketing together... :-)
keep it up Ted, always good to read your stuff

So true, the SEO rules are extremely unfair. I had my carpet cleaning site deindexed by Google. I still don't know what happened exactly, but it sucks when I come across sites that have spam plastered all over them. But like you said that's the state of SEO and we must learn to work within the walls.

Great article, which I agree with. Whilst at work I am an SEO Consultant, as that is the service we offer but when working for myself its a totally different story.

Very interesting insight and thank you for sharing your experience. I especially like your quote, "Why should you victimize yourself by calling yourself an SEO?". Very funny.

Man is that ever true. People are so entrenched in their own ideas of what everything is and how it "should" be done there is no room for movement. I find like business in general, people don't want to know the "real" risks involved, they want to think whatever they want to and expect the world to revolve around it. Then when they get dropped in the search results they blame everyone else for the situation they asked for or created themselves.

Great Post!

It is completely a case of a few bad apples... I just had an article dumped from a directory because they considered it to be spam. When I never even wrote the article with the intent of even link building. It was completely PSA (public service announcement).

And yet, other SEO-enabled articles still remain.

Let the witch-hunt begin!

I agree, when work as a SEO consultant that is who and what I am - when working on my own sites I use different user names to keep it all separate, though I sometimes mix them up...
