Lots of companies are still having a hard time moving away from traditional marketing/advertising methods...by overprotecting a brand and trying to control the message consumers receive on the web, companies are running into issues and claiming social media doesn't work...well no, it won't...Social media is a conversation not a push method of selling and advertising.

It will be interesting to see how viral marketing develops? I think the best ones are those which mix completely different circumstances but make them work. Things that shouldn't go together but do.

The most successful viral marketing campaigns are not those that directly try to sell a product, or create leads. Instead, it should be used to create a buzz about your product, or brand. This will indirectly increase interest in your products or brand.

This has to be the most important point and is probably the reason why many campaigns fail. Brands should avoid buying into viral for the wrong reasons. It's equally important to define the success criteria at the outset. Good post though.
