Robin Hood Tax – Can a Social Media Campaign & Bill Nighy Influence the UK Government?

A UK trending topic on Twitter today is Robin Hood Tax – with plenty of support for RobinHoodTax.org.uk’s excellent video featuring Bill Nighy:

The idea behind this is that “A tiny tax on bankers that would give billions to tackle poverty and climate change, here and abroad”.

So far, this very well-thought out social media campaign has generated:

All leading to 32,031 votes for and 3,811 against.

So what do you think? Is this enough to influence the UK Government and banks into giving up an average of 0.05 percent from speculative banking transactions? Surely it’s worth a go!

Thanks so much for your kind words. I’ve been helping with the online stuff for this campaign. Well thought out? Well, we did do some hard thinking yes. But most of the real energy has come from our supporters. It was mainly about making sure we set aside enough time to talk. Not sure where things will go next but will keep making that time. Thanks again.

What a great social media campaign,

When I first turned it on and saw that the video was over 3 minutes long I was thinking I was going to just watch the gist of it, but not only did it pull me in within a few seconds it kept my attention. Extremely well executed and one poll I will be voting for.

I think you have nailed the toughest part, and that is you have made the advert not only gripping but extremely easy to comprehend, I have already shared this with a number of individuals and receiving nothing but positive comments. you managed to target all levels of intelligence which is half the battle…. because some of the nation’s population who we really do need to help push this into becoming a reality have very little awareness of what these taxes are or how they can help, this really does give the ordinary person a sense of achieving something with adding to the poll and attempting to influence the decision.
