Spam.

This way of dealing with comment URL spam is more efficient. Our comment approval process was starting to be too costly. To get an idea about how such a process, once out of your own hands, can become too cumbersome, write down specific, detailed instructions for someone else on how to decide which URL's to let through or not.

Surprisingly, moderating CommentLuv is much easier; the over-optimized spam titles stand out right away :)

Hey Ruud! Why do you strip the URLs? Spam? PageRank hoarding? Too many comments?

Now that it's weekend, finally get back to this post :)

Yes, since the redesign we strip out URL's *but* we have CommentLuv in place. Will look into how we can remove that URL field from the comment form.

Thanks for pointing it out, Tad :)

Yep the whole nofollow tag has been a great failure.

The net result is that Google still follows and gives link juice for nofollow backlinks, although they apportion a lesser value.

Google would be better off trying to incorporate some intelligence to giving different juice depending on the type of backlink.

Otherwise, forum profile spamming and the like will continue to pervade the mainstream of SEO and other marketers. Sad but true.

This is really an informative post. It highlights the little (and not so little) things that web designers overlook. Thanks.

Hey roger! That was quick. Kudos. The new design is very usable. I liked the looks of the old one better though ;-)

graywolf: The conversation takes place elsewhere or not at all. You may be lucky and get the links but I gues in most cases you won't get neither the link nor the comment. For instance in my case I've completely forgotten waht I wanted to add as a comment to that post.
Also comments are great for ranking of older posts. Thanks to fresh comments I rank for years old postings.

Great post Tad.

Thanks for the replies guys - good to see it's either useful to know or in Graywolf's case there's a very good reason for it and it's actually working to his advantage.

Interesting article. In my experience, either a lot of SEO's aren't designers - or they're designers who forget to work on their own websites. Many SEO blogs are very bare bones and lacking some core fundamentals (probably even my own). Time for us SEO's to practice what we preach!

so lets see by turning off comments I have cut the time I spend moderating down to zero and get links from people because I have turned the comments off ... you want to explain to me again how I'm losing out?

Hey Tad, Thanks for the reminder ;) I stripped the blog down to a bare theme as I wasn't happy, time to get it dressed up again.

Exactly. While writing this post I discovered two of the issues at SEOptimise as well. Normally I forgot about them or ignored them as I use this blog in a different manner than the average user.
Btw.: Most people say SEO practicioners these days.

This is really good. Who else will help each other but fellow bloggers or fellow seo'ers(pardon me for lack of a good word). Sometimes you cannot really evaluate your own blog, it's always best to have someone take a look-see.
