This is a guest post from Kelvin Newman at Site Visibility.

I’m starting to feel a bit sorry for Yahoo, not only are they seen by most people as a bit of a joke, largely the stick is unwarranted. They’ve got some great little products and services, two of which I use to this great little way of keeping tracking of easy social media interaction opportunities.

The main service is Yahoo Answers, its a hugely popular social site where users ask and answer questions. If you’ve not checked Yahoo Answers recently, go over now and have a look, there will be dozens of people asking questions related to your industry – no matter how obscure or niche it is.

The nightmare though is having to revisit the site everyday to see whether there’s anything new or relevant. Fortunately the main categories have RSS feeds so you could set up the feed in your RSS reader to keep track of the mentions in your chosen category, but your a busy digital marketer, you don’t have time to check through every question asked on the site. That’s where Yahoo Pipes comes in.

If you’ve never heard of Yahoo Pipes don’t worry, nobody has. It’s simple tool which allows you to do some very simple filtering and sorting of web data like RSS feeds. It can do some pretty clever tricks but what we want it to do is really simple. Take a feed from Answers, search for any questions that contain your keywords, discard those without and deliver those that do into a new RSS stream.

Start by dragging and dropping the a fetch feed icon from the side bar into the main screen. This will then create a box with a text field. Cut and paste the feed url from your most relevant category in Yahoo Answers. If more than one category is applicable click the addition/plus symbol and it’ll add a new text field for another category.

Next click the Operators expanding button in the side bar, find the filter button and drag and drop it between the Fetch Feed Box and Feed Output. It’ll have a text field you can type the word or phrases you want to monitor for. The drop down fields give you flexibility whether you want to look just in the Question Title and/or description Etc.

You can add more than one keyword by clicking the plus symbol, it gets quite clever now as well, you could filter questions that include SEO and PPC or you could set it up for questions that include SEO or PPC. It’s pretty self explanatory when it’s in front of you.

Now you need to connect the feed to the filter and from the filter to the out put. Click the circle and the bottom of the feed fetcher and drag it to the start of the filter, then do the same from the filter to the output. It should look something like the picture below.

Nearly there now, just save the pipe and hit the ‘Run this Pipe’ button. This will take you to a page where you can subscribe to this new feed. But I’m too lazy/busy to check my feedreader daily, so I take it a step further and use FeedMyInbox to take the feed address and email me whenever there is a suitable question.

Clever time saving trick which with a little tweaking you can use on dozens of social sites with RSS feeds. Do you monitor any social sites like this? Any tips to save time checking back for opportunities?

In case you’ve managed to miss it, here’s the latest news from around the blogosphere:

And here’s the agreement and videos from Choicevalueinnovation.com – a website launched to break the news.

How will this affect the search industry? In a nutshell, it’s now confirmed that Yahoo.com as a portal will be powered by Bing and Yahoo Search Marketing will be merged into Microsoft adCenter. But there’s lots more to think about too and I’ve given my thoughts about this to the search experts react to the Yahoo / Microsoft deal post on Econsultancy (just before the news broke) and Search Cowboys:

“This is a huge deal & boost for Bing. It instantly increases their market share & consolidates Yahoo & Microsoft into a far stronger competitor to Google. It’s great news for PPC advertisers too, as they can justify spending time/budget on a second paid search platform now instead of just using AdWords.”

For all of the comments from myself and other search industry professionals please read the Econsultancy and Search Cowboys posts.

Don’t worry though, you should have time to prepare – it’s going to take about 2 years until they’re ready! ;)

Dell has been an early adopter of social media tools. Other than Apple that uses them for creating hype Dell uses social media in the direct business sense: They use Twitter to make money via direct sales among others.
In 2008 Dell managed to earn 2 million in revenue on Twitter which is a considerable amount unless you compare it to the overall revenue. In 2008 the Dell revenue was 61,1 billion dollars. So at the end of the day it’s not much for such an international corporation.

I’ve been following Dell’s engagement with social media for quite a while. Also I don’t like the rather sneaky approach of Apple to create publicity behind the scenes. Dell in contrast is straightforward and truly democratic in some of it’s social media outreach campaigns. Just yesterday I linked to their Ideastorm website as a great example of such outreach.

Dell Ideastorm is a huge project though. What’s by far easier to accomplish is using twitter as the so called “social media phone”. In case you follow me on Twitter you noticed that I use to complain all the time in spite of preferring positivity. In a way I test the companies reactions. Just recently I complained about Dell once again. After stumbling a blog post about a very affordable business notebook by Dell for 299$ I want straight to the Dell page, the US page. I’m from Germany so I wanted to see whether this laptop is available here too.
Dell offers a drop down menu on this page where you can choose from a plethora of countries. Now while choosing I noticed Tanzania as one of the options. As a former media activist I rejoiced at the thought of the digital divide being bridged by a high profile corporation like Dell. I wanted to check out what their offer in this African country looks like. All I got was an ugly error. I later checked the Germany option to see an error there too but before I complained via social media phone about the “Dell FAIL”.

Later on that day I was contacted by a Dell employee via Twitter though. He wasn’t angry or something he just inquired about the actual URL the error happens. He did a few times as the first URL I send him was just the error page so he couldn’t deal with the original problem. So obviously Dell employs diligent social media phone operators. You just complain into the social media sphere and the person who is responsible replies. That’s by far simpler than me looking up and calling a service number indeed.

Now you probably think that in 2009 every corporation does that. Well, they don’t. I complained about ASUS.com earlier this week. Why? ASUS.com refers to Gemany and Poland (and all other European nations) as being in Asia which is an insult. Europeans are somehow proud not be Asians which might be eurocentric but it’s still a stupid looking mistake. You can still see it right on their homepage. So while this ludicrous issue still persists at ASUS.com Dell managed to deal with their issue which was hidden somewhere on a product page. How can I trust a computer company like ASUS to build a good hardware when they don’t even get the difference between Europe and Asia?

OK, most of us are not corporation and their representatives. We can learn though from these two. Listen and reply to the social media phone like Dell does and don’t mess it up like ASUS. It should be known by now that the social media conversation is going on all the time and people are talking about you. On Twitter you need just very simple tools to track it successfully. Do it and don’t FAIL.

Roughly two weeks ago I elaborated on the 10 non-Google SEO ways to promote your business online in 2009 and presented a list of 35 non-Google SEO how tos, tutorials & other resources. They covered only half of the strategies I suggested as the non-Google SEO ways.

Today I collected links for the remaining 5 non-Google SEO strategies:

Shopping search engines

Yahoo Answers

Review sites

Local sites and local search

Niche communities

So based on these categories here they are, 30+ more non-Google SEO “how to” online marketing resources for 2009:

Shopping search engines or shopping comparison sites like BizRate, Shopping.com or NexTag seemingly exist for ages, some lost steam along the way like Kelkoo did. According to Google Trends their traffic peaked around the Christmas season of 2007. Nonetheless you still can’t ignore them in ecommerce no matter what you sell. Sadly there are only few resources dealing with optimization for shopping search, some of those there are stem from several years ago. They were published as early as 2003 or 2004. They’re still valid though so I included them.

Shopping Search Tactics

Shopping Search and Merchant Reputations – Search Engine Watch (SEW)

Yahoo Answers is the Google of Q&A sites. It has an overwhelming market share in English, above 90%. Thus I focused on marketing advice on Yahoo Answers. Considering its impact and traffic numbers, here too the number of resources is limited. Luckily the few there are are of very high quality.

Review sites made me struggle even more than shopping search engines. Although TripAdvisor, one of the most prolific social review sites has been around since 2000 I couldn’t find a thorough resource that covers SEO for TripAdvisor, only a short post. Also other resources are scarce. This is partly due to the fact that review sites are not considered a genre by themselves. Also shopping search engines, local sites or social shopping sites are in a way review sites too. So I only link two resources in this category. In case you have more please add them in the comments.

Make the Most of Trip Advisor — Alaska SEO

Local sites and local search are considered a crucial part of local SEO. Local SEO is in a way the next big thing in SEO. For years to come we can expect local SEO to become ever more important due to the proliferation of mobile devices and other hard & software leading to more locally oriented search. There are at least a dozen excellent resources for local search optimization:

Niche communities have been a quite revolution in the recent years. Digg-like Sites like Sphinn (for search marketing news) or Tip’d (for finance news) have sprung up in every niche conceivable. In case you’re serious about search marketing you can’t ignore Sphinn nowadays. Instead of wasting your time with Digg for most businesses addressing niche social news sites is the way to go. Sadly here too there are less resources than I’d wish they were. Thus I focused on the two sites I know as an active user and mentioned above plus added a few articles from one source, a problogger who is successfully targeting and describing niche social news sites.

That’s all for now. I’d like to make this list more represantitive though. So make sure to look up in your bookmarks whether you have some resources dealing especially with the 3 categories that are insufficiently covered as of now in this list. Add even more non-Google SEO “how to” online marketing resources for 2009!

Make sure they are how to articles or tutorials though!

The Road to Tomorrow (and Happy 2009!). Creative Commons license by Stuck in Customs.

While Twitter has become the perhaps single most important social site for marketers this year it’s time to reevaluate the ways to promote your business online in 2009.

Are the methods we used in 2008 still valid? Do they still work? Or do we have to adapt again in 2009 to a whole new Web? Moreover: Which ways outside the Google search moloch are there?

Thus I picked the 10 Non-Google SEO Ways to Promote your Business Online in 2009. With SEO I mean the strict definition so that PPC, email marketing and affiliate marketing etc. are not included regardless of their worth.

Twitter! Do I need to say more about that? Connect with your peers, fans, clients and inform about special offers etc.

Blogging at a hosted blog on your domain is still the best interface for your online business, your clients love it, people loosely interested in your offering love it, Google loves it

YouTube videos are quite frequently on top of Google search results and the site has millions of visitors on its own, Will it Blend? Yes you can as well.

LinkedIn is the number one place to find professionals in each category, you can also determine the authority of any expert by his contributions (not necesessarily by the number of connections)

Social shopping sites are the new kid on the block you can’t ignore. They boomed in late 2008 and can’t be ignored anymore.

Shopping search engines, especially for ecommerce sites are still big, everybody uses them o compare products and prices. You must be there.

Yahoo Answers + other Q&A sites unless you are in a business where everybody knows everthing by heart ;-)

Review sites like TripAdvisor, not only for the travel sector both influence consumers like no other websites and they propel your Google Local listings to the top too

Local sites and local search like TrueLocal, Yell.com, Qype.co.uk allow people to find what they want in their vicinity, they are becoming more popular due to the smartphones and netbooks wave

Niche communities, for all kinds of businesses, it might be forums, Ning comunities, niche social sites like Sphinn for search marketers

Viewing this list it might occur to you that it’s important to use several crucial sites that matter. In a way most of these are “search” or “hub” sites depending on what you look for. Do not focus mainly on Google.

The above sites and services make you succeed in Google as a side-effect. They work directly in the first place by guiding consumers in your direction.

And they’re off… Again. More soap opera and cynicism erupts from three of the top performing search engines as Yahoo! sheds executives almost as fast as share value and Microsoft grumbles about Google being “anti-competitive”. Who needs WWE when you have giants like this wrestling each day?

Last week, Yahoo! lost even more top executives; Joshua Schachter (he of Delicious origin) and Brad Garlinghouse – this follows recent announcements from Caterina Fake and Steward Butterfield (of Flickr foundings), as well as search advertising exec Qi Lu and senior vice-president of search Vish Makhijani.

These names may mean little to anyone who does not follow the search scene but one thing which should be pretty obvious is that such a brain drain happening so quickly is unlikely to bode well for the engine. I would go so far as to say that Yahoo! is breaking apart and – without fast action soon – could lose its edge and its long-secure place as the world’s second most popular search engine.

It interests me, however, that the disintegration of Yahoo! is not being caused by any drop off in search engine figures. The number of people using search engines rises steadily; if Yahoo! ceases to be a main portal then MSN and Google will mop up their traffic. Search tools remain the best way for consumers to find their way around the web and if Yahoo! breaks, it will be as a result of self-destruction.

Show Inlinks expect from this subdomain:

Show pages from: All Subdomains:

This looks like a useful report for websites which use multiple subdomains, enabling the option to remove internal subdomain links while still counting all other links from the same domain.

Nathania Johnson posted some very interesting stats on SEW yesterday to show how Wikipedia’s traffic has grown 8,000% in 5 years due to search referrals. This is an unbelievable statistic but as mentioned in the article that’s what happens when Google ranks all of your pages as #1!

There’s a mixture of opinions but many SEO’s would agree that Wikipedia shouldn’t appear in Google’s top 10 for searches on nearly every piece of content they have. I think it depends on the specific search term, but in my opinion Wikipedia provides little value when ranking #1 for searches such as SEO and restaurant. Most people performing these queries would be looking for somewhere to eat, or looking for SEO advice, blogs or tools. If they wanted to find a definition a “what is …” or “define:…” query would have worked fine.

Lets take a look at the results for a Google search on holidays:

Surely people know what a holiday is!

And how do you think Wikipedia would perform if they used Google AdWords?

I would imagine an ad like this would be lucky to get a CTR of 0.1% with a low quality score, but it’s not a problem in the organic listings.

Google has become by far the leading search engine because it gives searchers what they are looking for, and there is an argument that Wikipedia mixes up the results to provide a different type of listing, I agree with this to a certain extent but in all reality it’s nowhere near being the most relevant webpage for any of the above searches. Although not all of it’s rankings are unfair, if you search for a footballer, for example, you get quality content and stats from Wikipedia which deserves it’s ranking at the top as it’s useful to the searcher.

How can Google’s algortihm change to prevent Wikipedia’s SERPs domination?
In my opinion the Google algorithm should pay less attention to the strength of wikipedia.org as a whole domain, calculating rankings based upon the inbound links to a specific page instead. If your content is of a higher quality and more relevant to the actual search term this should be out ranking Wikipedia, but how do you compete with 5 million links?

These rankings would be completely different if the algorithm considered that only 2,000 inbound links are relevant, probably less when you consider no-one should really be linking to this! :)

What do you think, does Wikipedia rightfully deserve most of it’s rankings and provide searchers with the information they are looking for? Or is Wikipedia irrelevant for many search terms and ranking far too highly?

A couple of weeks ago I reported that Yahoo! Site Explorer UK & Ireland launched in beta, today I noticed that they have also rolled out a country specific Yahoo! Site Explorer for a wider range of countries.

So far I’ve noticed this for Germany, Australia, Spain, France and Italy. Looking at the results returned for inbound links these are returning different counts and appear to be heavily weighted towards inbound links from each specific country.

Following on from my original example which looked at links for www.bbc.co.uk, here are the results for the same search on Yahoo! Site Explorer Germany:

Yahoo!7 Site Explorer Australia shows a different set of results, many of which are from .au domains as opposed to .de from the German search or .it from the Italian results etc…

These results can certainly be useful if you are looking to find country specific links which may be influencing competitor rankings in google.com.au for example.

I noticed today that Yahoo! have launched Yahoo! Site Explorer UK & Ireland in beta. There seems to be no official announcement (or any other information on the web about this yet!) so I would guess it’s been released in the last couple of days.

Here are the results for an external inbound link search for www.bbc.co.uk:
Yahoo! Site Explorer UK & Ireland: 1,575,969
Yahoo! Site Explorer: 11,400,000

The reason for the fewer number of links on Yahoo! Site Explorer UK & Ireland seems to be because this is very UK focused, some non-UK links are listed but this mainly contains inbound links from .co.uk and UK hosted .com’s. These also seem to be ordered with strong UK and Irish links at the top of the page:

This could become very useful for UK-based competitor backlink analysis! ;)

Launching this week Yahoo Buzz is a Digg style service that works with a closed list of 100 sites that Yahoo has handpicked.

The most interesting part of the service is that the most popular stories will be promoted to the Yahoo homepage! Apparently a Wired story that was featured on the Yahoo.com homepage received 2 million unique visitors within 2 hours.

Yahoo will rotate stories that make the homepage and hopefully will be monitoring the traffic they send otherwise small sites will crash very quickly.

Apparently Microsoft might be buying Yahoo, a move that would have quite a big effect on SEO.

If the deal goes through then Microsoft is likely to pool the search algorithms and create something that can really rival Google. They would have a ready made market share and could pose a threat over the long term. In the UK I don’t think anybody would notice because Google is too far ahead but in the US the effect would be much larger.

One alternative theory is that Google will take over Yahoo, they are cash rich and wouldn’t want their dominant position to the threatened. I think if Google can make the deal they should grab the chance with both hands.

Yahoo is apparently in the process of integrating del.icio.us tags into their search results but I don’t think anybody in the UK will actually notice. Hitwise has reported that Yahoo has less than 2.05% market share over here now and don’t even feature in the top 4 search engines any more.

Most people in the UK only ever consider using Google to search. Some know about other search engines and are put off by the number of adverts, a lot say Google is just a better search engine.

Whatever the result it’s clear that even if Yahoo and MSN do something really amazing they can’t beat Google because not enough people know about them over here. The average web surfer wants nothing more than to find stuff, quickly. How can anybody compete with Google in this climate?

Google has always done very well by having a clean and uncluttered homepage. The usability aspects of this are made even more obvious when you compare results from a competitive search query such as “mobile phones” across both Yahoo and Google.

As you can see from the screenshots Yahoo only manages to fit 2 natural listings before the fold on my 22 inch monitor whereas Google has 6 results showing. This is why Google will always be most peoples favourite search engine and also why you don’t want to be outside the top 2 results on Yahoo.

A couple of weeks ago I setup a 301 redirect for ukgoogleconsultant.co.uk (an old domain I used ages ago), redirecting this to a new Google consultant webpage on the seoptimise.com domain instead.

Two weeks later here are the results:

Google

New webpage indexed.

Old website almost fully delisted in Google index.

New page now has a PageRank 4, SERoundtable reported that 301 redirects pass Google PageRank & signals in a couple of weeks back in February, looks like it’s true! :)

Google rankings remain the same, a search for Google consultant is now showing the new version at #3, the same position as the old domain.

Yahoo!

Old domain homepage still indexed, internal pages have disappeared though.

New webpage also indexed.

The old domain is still ranking in Yahoo at #5. Yahoo! seems to take ages redirecting pages, the current #1 result for this search is a Wikipedia entry for Google consultant which was redirected to their search engine optimization page around 6 months ago!

Windows Live

New page indexed

Old domain has 2 remaining webpages indexed, one of them the homepage.

New version is the one appearing for live.com searches, which is still at #1.

So far I haven’t seen any other ranking increases throughout the seoptimise.com domain as a result of the redirect, but to be honest I wouldn’t have really expected this to have a noticeable effect anyway.

Having only submitted this site to Yahoo Site Explorer last week I was surprised to find some nice extra features which I hadn’t expected today.

Here’s a screenshot of the stats for www.seoptimise.com:

Just in case anyone else has taken as long as me, and perhaps didn’t see the point in submitting to Yahoo Site Explorer, here are 5 good reasons why you should authenticate your site:

1) Language information
Make sure Yahoo! knows the correct language of your website.

2) Last crawl date
When viewing your own site’s page’s you are listed with a date/time stamp for when each page was last crawled.

3) Subdomains
View the different subdomains Yahoo have indexed for your website.

4) Getting a new site indexed
For websites having problems with getting indexed in Yahoo! submiting to Yahoo Site Explorer can help to speed up the process.

5) Submit a site feed
Make sure Yahoo! finds your latest blog posts quickly by submitting your RSS site feed.

It looks like there’s been an update to Yahoo Site Explorer links today, I’ve noticed a large increase in inbound links for a number of different sites.

I first found that seoptimise.com had increased to 12,779 from around 10,000 which is great! :) But I’m not the only one, last week I noted down the total number of links for Digg, SEOmoz, Pronet Advertising and Tropical SEO and they have all received substantal increases too, maybe this is because they’re counting all the extra email links! :)

Digg: 80,581,285 -> 96,274,838
SEOmoz: 512,025 -> 700,970
Pronet Advertising: 198,313 -> 225,616
Tropical SEO: 13,803 -> 17,600

I just noticed that for all link searches you can only view the first 1,000 inbound links, I don’t think I’ve ever checked that far down before though so not sure if there’s always been a limit to this.

It’s quite interesting that of all the .ico images that could have been mixed up the Yahoo one was used, even a new window and a CTRL+F5 page refresh doesn’t fix it, but everything’s fine in FireFox. Also if anyone knows how I can set MSN Messenger to open my Hotmail account using my default browser instead of a new IE window please let me know, I don’t think Microsoft have made that too easy though! ;)

Last month I noticed some strange Yahoo! results when searching for SEOptimise. This was listing all results related to “soroptimist” rather than anything to do with this website.

Since then I’ve been working on my own online reputation project by building up some social media profiles, signing up for some new forums and submiting the site to some new directories with business profile pages. In addition to this I have also purchased a Yahoo! Directory listing which I expect has been the biggest, single factor in controlling the search results for my company name. While performing this search on Yahoo.com today 9,880 SEOptimise results were returned instead of a list of soroptimist SERPs, this still included a suggestion of “Did you mean: soroptimist” but I prefer these results much better!
